The Vlando Small Faux Leather Travel Jewellery Box comes supplied within a thin white cardboard box sealed. The packaging is largely plain with the exception of some Vlando branding on the lid and QR Facebook / Wechat codes on the rear.

Inside the Vlando Travel Jewellery Box is protected with what feels like a thin felt material wrap bearing rather classy gold leaf Vlando branding. Underneath the jewellery box is a little warranty card and inside the box is a single silica gel moisture absorbing sachet.

The following measurements are overall measurements of the box / case. More detailed measurements of the internal sections are noted further on.

– Height = 57.06mm at its greatest point (the lid is padded on the outside and the centre is raised slightly higher than the edges).
– Width = 102.97mm at its greatest point.
– Length = 106.03mmat its greatest point. (This measurement takes into account the zip head which is located at the rear when the case is fully closed. Excluding the zip head the measurement is 104.45mm).

The case empty weighs 144g.

The Vlando Small Faux Leather Travel Jewellery Box is constructed in the style of a clam shell with a single zip securing the two sections of the case closed. The zip is cotton with nylon teeth and a single non magnetic metal head and pull tab, the colour of this zip while matching the PU leather covering on the case is of a slightly lighter shade.

The inside of the lid is fully lined with velvet and is recessed by 1.95cm from the back edge to the protruding edge of the zip teeth. (The way that my mother taught me to test for velvet was to brush it one way and then the other. One direction should be smooth and the other slightly coarse and when brushing in the opposite direction it should slightly change colour, and this ticks both those boxes).

On the internal bottom edge of the lid is a small pocket constructed from the same material as the lining with an elasticated open edge. This pocket measures approximately 3.5cm deep and 8.7cm wide and the elasticated opening should provide secure storage for all but the daintiest of bracelets / necklaces and retains my small silver charm bracelet well even when on the move.

Above the elasticated pocket, indented into the velvet lining is a round envelope logo with “VLANDO” branding underneath in gold leaf.

The two sections of the case are secured together on the outside with a 51.25mm square patch of PU leather and on the inside with a separate patch of velvet. The internal velvet patch isn’t actually a means of reinforcement, it actually serves to prevent the case being opened more than 90 degrees.

In reality a slightly longer patch of velvet on the hinge would have been most welcomed as even with the weight of charm bracelet in the elasticated pocket acting as a counterweight the lid is incapable of remaining opening without being held. If the velvet retaining tab had been slightly longer and ruched it could allow for a slightly greater angle of opening and hopefully a means of remaining open without being held so. (In fairness during photographing, I was able to force the lid to remain open by itself for about 4 or 5 seconds).

Attached to the inside bottom edge of the lid secured on top of the internal velvet hinge is a flap cover that measures 4.73mm thick. The back surface of this flap is entirely covered with velvet and on the front is a 59mm square mirror with a raised velvet covered frame. This flap pushes into the lid and remains securely in place at all times. To pull the flap down to access behind there is a small 1.6cm long 0.9cm long ribbon loop.

Given how well this flap remains in place when pushed into the lid its a shame there isn’t additional storage within the lid section as it would prove more than capable as acting as a divider. Removing the internal velvet hinge would then have allowed the case to be fully opened 180 degrees flat on a table and the potential storage of the case could have easily been doubled.

If I were designing such a case I would have put the Vlando gold leaf branding on the lid. Three rows of pillow holders in the lid for storing earrings and rings and a 2×3 divider section in the base for necklaces and bracelets and the mirror flap would prove a suitable means of separating the two halves of the case. Given the design and intended use as a travel case you want to maximise any potential storage so that you are not wasting space in your luggage.

The base section of the case is split into two halves and entirely lined with velvet. On the right, there are cushions providing storage for 6 rings or pairs of earrings offering 30.26mm wide storage. In total there are 7 cushions covered with velvet and padded with layered polyethylene foam. Given the lack of dedicated earring storage it should be noted these cushions are also suitable for stud backed and small hoop style earrings.

On the left there is a 89.66mm x 55.05mm (these measurements are taken at the greatest point as the edges are rounded) storage compartment. This compartment is fitted with two removable dividers measuring 3.36mm thick that can be used to create two or three smaller compartments of almost any desired size. Given the lack of any dedicated earring storage some holes in one of the dividers would have been nice for butterfly backed earring storage. With the dividers removed the compartment also proves suitable for smaller watches.

During my travels and use of the case there are two observations that I would like to make regarding the bottom section of the case.

The first is that the mirror is not protected from any jewellery stored within the bottom section of the case and it could potentially become chipped or scratched. To avoid this I placed a small jewellery cleaning cloth over the bottom compartments to act as a barrier between the mirror and the contents in the bottom section of the case.

Not only does this so far have appeared to have served its purpose, it has also inadvertently solved the second problem. The flap containing the mirror has a raised edge that sits flush with the base section of the case as a result, there is a small gap between some of the dividers in the bottom section of the case and the recessed mirror.

When the case isn’t being moved around this obviously presents no problem, however on the move smaller necklaces, chains and bracelets did have a tendency to travel from one compartment to another. However, with a small cloth draped over the bottom section to protect the mirror this actually prevented this from happening.

So whether the cloth is actually protecting the mirror or not it is worth using one if you are finding your smaller items of jewellery are moving from one divided compartment to the other. It should be noted that the cushions do an admirable job of retaining both rings and earrings at all times, I have yet to open the case and find one dislodged.

The Vlando Small Faux Leather Travel Jewellery Box in terms of build quality is hard to fault considering the price, that doesn’t mean I’m not going to be picky.

1. The outside surface of the lid is padded, I do not know what with but it sounds like brown paper as it makes are rather distinctive, audible rustling when pressed.

2. There is a 1.5cm long patch of overstitching on the PU leather hinge and the end of the cotton thread has just been tucked in behind the patch of PU leather. It’s hardly noticeable, but is a slight detraction for the overall quality.

3. On the back edge of the bottom section of the case there are cutouts in the PU leather that allow the hinge, patch to sit flush with the rest of the case along the bottom edge. On the left side of the hinge this cut out is either too large of the patch is not correctly lined up and part of the cut out is exposed.

Overall the quality of the case is very good and it is easily worth the asking price, these details are small and hardly obvious unless you go looking to find fault.
